Project objectives

The objective of the project is to create an active research team in nanotechnology led by internationally recognized scientists. The team consists of foreign scientists, returning Czech scientists and young local researchers. Two research groups form the team:

One group is led by Prof. M. Cada of Dalhousie University (Canada). It focuses on research in nanomagnetism and nanophotonics. The activities include studies of magnetic nanostructures and nanoparticles, spectral ellipsometry diagnostics, magnetooptics and plasmonics, modelling of novel nanophotonic structures with defects, and others.

The second group is led by Prof. P. Filip of Carbondale University (U.S.A.). It engages in the development and applications of composite aluminosilicate nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, in characterization of particles released into the environment by friction processes, and development of methods for characterization and evaluation of nanomaterials.

The team members will contribute to the educational process by supervising Ph.D. students, participating in the accredited program Nanotechnology (B.Sc., M.Sc., MA.Sc.), supporting accreditation of the Ph.D. degree in this program, offering seminars, and organizing workshops and conferences. Project researchers are expected to be involved in close collaboration with foreign academic institutions such as those in the U.S., Japan, Canada, France, Germany, etc. Scientists and researchers from these institutions will be invited for stays at VSB-TUO, and the team members will visit (short-term as well as long-term) laboratories of their foreign collaborators. The goal is to engage VSB-TUO in the system of international high-education schools through common collaborative research projects and programs. As a result, strong acceleration is expected of achieved scientific and research results in the form of publications in high-impact journals, patents, etc., in both basic as well as applied research. Transfer of such knowledge and advances into the university educational programs is also one of the objectives.
